Stone forest in Russia – Lena Pillars

October 6, 2014

Lena Pillars, a natural wonder by the Lena river in far eastern Siberia, looks like a fantasy film set. With miles of stone pillars as high as 300 metres, this one-of-a-kind marvel is a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2012. Millions of years ago the whole area was under the ocean, therefore unique fossils can be found there. The pillars themselves were formed later though, thanks to weathering of limestone of which they consist.

Getting to Lena Pillars national park from Moscow can even take four days, but as you can see, it’s absolutely worth it. The wilderness and remote location of this Siberian wonder make it even more fascinating.
