One of this month’s highlights of our stay in Portugal was a visit to a village called Sintra. With three castles, constant cloudy weather and mysterious forests, it has long been a place of fairytales and legends.
On one of the hills above Sintra sits an 8th century Moorish castle, built during the period of Muslim Iberia. Some say the rocks in the castle grow like trees and one can find the entrance to an underground city there. Others claim the Holy Grail is hidden somewhere in the stronghold.
Either way, the view on the Atlantic Ocean, Lisbon and its suburbs is incomparable. The Castle of the Moors can be explored freely without a guide and is among the best castles I’ve seen in Europe. Highly recommended!
