Lake Syvash, is a system of salty lagoons on the border of Crimea, Ukraine. As they are very shallow, they heat up during the summer and produce an unpleasant smell, which is the reason Syvash is sometimes called the Rotten Sea. Some parts of Syvash are inhabited by salt-tolerant algae, giving the water a unique red color, photographed here by Sergey Anashkevych.
